Araghchi Raises Alarm Over Unilateral Coercive Measures Threatening Global Diplomacy

At the High-level Meeting on the Global Development Initiative, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi voiced deep concern over unilateral coercive measures imposed by certain developed countries, describing them as a serious threat to economic growth, poverty eradication, and sustainable development in the Global South.

“These measures, instead of honoring long-standing commitments, violate the fundamental rights of citizens and undermine the progress of developing nations,” Araghchi said, addressing the theme: “Recommit to our original aspirations, unite to build a brighter future of global development.”

Highlighting the rising challenges, he pointed to hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity as growing global threats, warning that famine risks are spreading worldwide. He also drew attention to the widening digital divide, especially in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, calling for inclusive, transparent, and fair governance that fully involves developing countries.

Araghchi stressed that current crises extend beyond economics. The deteriorating situation in West Asia, particularly the ongoing genocide in Gaza, exemplifies the international community’s failure to uphold international law and prevent crimes against humanity. “Foreign occupation, aggression, inequality, and injustice can reverse developmental gains and destabilize entire regions and the world,” he warned.

He emphasized that the Global Development Initiative provides a critical platform for developing nations to strengthen cooperation, shape the global economic order, and create an enabling environment for sustainable growth. “In these times, recommitting to multilateral cooperation and rejecting unilateralism is more urgent than ever for global peace, security, and development,” Araghchi concluded.

This strong call for solidarity and fairness positions Iran as a vocal advocate for a balanced international order that prioritizes the needs and rights of developing nations.
