SAEDNEWS: Journey to the Gates of Hell: Turkmenistan’s Mysterious Burning Crater in the Karakum Desert — Canadian Explorer George Kourounis and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life

According to Saednews, In the middle of Turkmenistan’s Karakum Desert lies a massive crater measuring about 70 meters across. More than four decades ago, this fiery pit became one of the region’s most unusual landmarks. Canadian explorer George Kourounis entered the crater to collect samples of microorganisms living in its extreme environment.

Known as the “Door to Hell,” the crater is one of the world’s most unusual sites, with flames burning continuously from beneath the ground. Geologists set it alight in 1971 after the ground collapsed during drilling operations and released natural gas. They expected the fire to burn out within a few days, but it continued for decades.

For scientists interested in extreme forms of life and the possibility of extraterrestrial life, the crater provides a remarkable natural laboratory. Studying microorganisms that can survive in such harsh conditions may offer clues about how life could exist in similarly extreme environments elsewhere.

Kourounis told National Geographic that he spent a year preparing for the expedition before attempting to descend into the crater.

In footage of the expedition, the Canadian explorer can be seen wearing heat-resistant protective clothing and suspended inside the roughly 20-meter-deep crater. He descended on a flame-resistant rope, swinging above the burning ground while collecting samples.

Despite the extreme conditions and obvious dangers, Kourounis completed his mission. The expedition provided scientists with samples from an environment rarely accessible to researchers.

The crater dates back to the early 1970s, when Soviet-era geologists discovered natural gas while drilling in the area. The ground suddenly collapsed beneath the drilling equipment, creating the crater. Fearing that the released gas could cause an explosion and pose a danger to nearby residents, the geologists set the gas alight, believing the fire would eventually go out.

Instead, the flames continued burning.

Locals came to call the site the “Door to Hell,” and the unusual crater has attracted thousands of visitors over the years.

In 2010, Turkmenistan’s president ordered officials to find a way to extinguish and fill the crater, but the plan was never carried out.
