The Best Way to Peel a Coconut: Simple and Hassle-Free

According to Saednews, We usually face a big challenge when peeling a coconut and wonder how we can do it easily and without trouble. As you know, the coconut is surrounded by a very hard shell that requires certain tricks to remove.

Coconut is rich in nutrients and beneficial compounds that meet many of our body’s needs, but many people avoid buying it because of the difficulty of peeling it.

Steps for peeling a coconut

Here we will teach you a practical and proper method so you can safely peel a coconut and enjoy eating it.

The best method for peeling a coconut: simple and easy

Extracting coconut water

Before breaking the shell and reaching the flesh, it is better to first drain the coconut water. If you buy a fresh, husked coconut, it is recommended to drink the water directly from the fruit, as its taste is completely different from drinking it from a glass.

Coconuts available in stores usually have less husk. In this case, use a sharp knife to cut the top part and then create an opening for a straw. After that, enjoy the tropical coconut water using a straw.

Sometimes store-bought coconuts still have a hard shell, and the process is slightly different. In this case, look at the bottom of the coconut. You will see three dots, known as the “eyes of the coconut.” Use a skewer to check which one is softer. Each eye is about 1/2 inch in size. Use a corkscrew or skewer and a hammer to pierce one of these eyes.

Make sure all tools are clean before use. Perform this step on a cutting board to avoid damaging surfaces in case the hammer slips. Once one of the eyes is opened, drain the water or drink it directly using a straw.

The best way to crack a coconut

Now that the water is removed, it’s time to open the coconut shell. There are several methods for this. One common method is hitting the shell with a meat tenderizer or a similar tool.

Wrap the coconut in a towel and hold it with your non-dominant hand. Then strike it several times with the other hand until the hard shell cracks.

A more interesting method

Another method is baking the coconut. After draining the water, place the coconut in an oven at 400°F (about 200°C) for 20 minutes. The outer shell will begin to crack due to the heat. Then remove it from the oven and let it cool until it can be handled safely. After that, use a meat mallet or the back of a knife to tap it until the shell fully breaks and separates.

How to separate coconut flesh from the shell

Once the shell is cracked, you face another challenge: how to remove the flesh.

If you used the baking method, the flesh will separate easily using a spoon. Otherwise, place the opened coconut on a cutting board with the shell facing up and gently tap it with a mallet to loosen the flesh. Then use a knife to separate it from the shell.

You will notice a thin brown layer still attached to the flesh. This can also be removed easily with a paring knife, just like peeling any other fruit.

And that’s how you can peel a coconut easily.
