It is a surprisingly common experience: you hear a new track and decide that it is not for you. Then you encounter it again—on the radio, in a friend's car, in a shop or through a playlist. After several more listens, something changes. The chorus starts to sound familiar. You know when the beat will arrive. Eventually, you may find yourself waiting for the song to come on.
This transformation is not simply a matter of "getting used to it." Psychology and neuroscience offer several clues about why familiarity can change the way we experience music.

When we hear an unfamiliar song, our brains have little information about what will happen next.
Music unfolds over time, so listeners continually form expectations about rhythm, melody, harmony and other musical events. Researchers have proposed that the brain's ability to predict upcoming sounds is part of what makes music rewarding.
A new song can therefore feel difficult to process at first—not necessarily because it is objectively unpleasant, but because its patterns have not yet become familiar.
After repeated listening, the musical structure becomes easier to anticipate.
The guitar riff no longer arrives unexpectedly. The pause before the chorus becomes recognizable. You may even begin mentally anticipating the next lyric or beat before it happens.
That sense of recognition can make listening feel more fluent and satisfying.
Psychologists call one relevant phenomenon the mere-exposure effect: repeated exposure to a stimulus can increase a person's preference for it. The effect was famously associated with psychologist Robert Zajonc, and the American Psychological Association defines it as increased liking resulting from repeated exposure.
Music provides a particularly interesting example.
A study published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review found that repeated exposure increased liking for unfamiliar melodies across several experiments.
Another experiment followed listeners over about four weeks, presenting 40 musical excerpts repeatedly. Liking increased with repeated listening across different levels of musical complexity. The researchers also found that familiarity with a musical style was an especially strong predictor of liking.
So when a song begins to sound better after several listens, part of what may be happening is remarkably simple: your brain has learned the song.
Familiarity does more than make a song recognizable.
Brain-imaging research suggests that familiar music can engage networks involved in emotion, memory and reward. In one fMRI study, familiar music produced stronger activity in several emotion-related and reward-related regions than unfamiliar music.
A later systematic review and meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies found evidence that familiar music engages brain systems associated with prediction and motor processing. The researchers suggested that this may partly reflect the brain anticipating rhythms, melodies and other events in songs it already knows.
That helps explain a familiar sensation: you are not merely hearing the song—you are knowing what comes next.
The pleasure can begin slightly before the musical moment arrives.
Some of the strongest musical experiences involve anticipation.
Think about a song with a dramatic chorus. On the first listen, the transition may surprise you. After hearing it several times, you know it is coming. The buildup itself can become enjoyable because your brain has learned the pattern.
Research into pleasurable musical experiences has linked intense "chills" to activity in brain regions involved in reward, motivation and emotion, including parts of the striatum.
This does not mean that every catchy song triggers the same response or that music activates the brain exactly like food or other biological rewards. Rather, music can recruit some of the brain's reward-related circuitry despite having no obvious survival value of its own.
The anticipation is part of the experience.
There is an important catch: hearing a song repeatedly does not guarantee that you will eventually love it.
Research on music exposure has produced different patterns depending on the listener, the music and the amount of repetition. Some studies have found that liking can eventually decline after excessive exposure, while other naturalistic studies have found continued increases in liking.
A large meta-analysis of the broader mere-exposure literature also found evidence that the relationship between exposure and liking can take an inverted-U form under some conditions.
In everyday life, this makes intuitive sense. A song can move from "I don't like this" to "This is growing on me", and eventually to "Please stop playing this song."
The sweet spot depends on the person and the circumstances.
Familiarity does not have to mean that you have heard the exact song before.
If you already enjoy a particular genre, rhythm, vocal style or production approach, a new track may feel easier to understand. Research on repeated listening found that familiarity with a musical style was a particularly strong predictor of liking.
That helps explain why someone who loves jazz may quickly appreciate a new jazz recording, while another listener might need more exposure before the same musical patterns feel natural.
In other words, your brain does not approach every new song from zero.
It brings a library of musical expectations with it.
There is another reason a song can grow on you: context.
A track heard repeatedly during a particular period of life can become connected to places, people and experiences. Research on personally familiar music has found links between familiar music and brain networks involved in autobiographical and self-related processing.
That means a song's appeal can eventually become about more than its melody.
Perhaps it reminds you of a long drive, a particular summer, a friendship or a period when your life was changing. Once those associations develop, hearing the opening notes can bring back more than the sound itself.
The song has acquired a history.
Sometimes, the answer is simply that you had not learned how to hear it yet.
A first listen gives you the surface: the voice, beat, instruments and overall impression. Repeated listening can reveal structure. You begin to recognize patterns, anticipate transitions and understand how different parts fit together.
At the same time, familiarity can make the song feel less uncertain and more mentally fluent.
That does not mean your first reaction was "wrong." Musical taste remains highly individual, and repeated exposure is only one factor among many.
But the next time a song you initially disliked starts creeping into your playlist, there may be a reason.
Your brain might simply have moved from "What am I listening to?" to "I know what's coming—and I like it."
