Ingredients for the Pasta

  • 680 g dry pasta

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Salt, for boiling the pasta

Ingredients for the Meat Filling

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed

  • 900 g ground beef

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup tomato sauce

  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped

Ingredients for the Béchamel Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 4 cups milk

  • ½ cup chicken broth

  • 113 g low-moisture mozzarella cheese

  • 1 egg

How to Make Béchamel Pasta

Preheat the oven to 205°C (400°F). Lightly grease the baking dish you will be using.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions, stirring occasionally. Drain the pasta and toss it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

Prepare the Meat Filling

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the onion and sauté until softened. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant.

Add the ground beef and cook until it is browned and fully cooked.

Season with salt and add the tomato sauce. Continue cooking for a few minutes, until most of the liquid has evaporated.

Remove the skillet from the heat, add the chopped parsley, and mix well.

Prepare the Béchamel Sauce

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat.

Add the flour and whisk continuously until the mixture becomes lightly golden.

Add the salt and nutmeg. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.

Add the chicken broth and continue stirring until the sauce becomes smooth and thick.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the mozzarella cheese until melted and incorporated.

In a small bowl, beat the egg. Gradually add some of the hot béchamel sauce to the egg while whisking continuously. This helps prevent the egg from curdling.

Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and stir until well combined.

Assemble the Pasta

Spread half of the cooked pasta evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Add the seasoned ground beef mixture and spread it evenly over the pasta.

Cover the meat layer with the remaining pasta.

Pour the béchamel sauce evenly over the top, creating a smooth, complete layer.

Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the top is bubbling and golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the pasta rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the layers to set and makes the dish easier to serve.
