$55 Million DAI Theft Triggered by a Single Wrong Click; Coinbase Retains the Funds

According to the Saed News cryptocurrency service, this lawsuit concerns the theft of $55 million worth of DAI stablecoins in August 2024, which occurred through a large-scale phishing attack. The plaintiff claims that Coinbase has frozen part of the traced assets but refuses to return them without a formal court order.

According to court filings, the major theft happened when the victim logged into a fake website and unintentionally granted attackers access to their wallet. The hackers used a phishing tool called “Inferno Drainer” to withdraw $55.47 million in DAI from the victim’s wallet. After the incident, the blockchain security firm Zero Shadow managed to trace part of the stolen funds to a retail account on Coinbase.

The plaintiff’s lawyers stated that while Coinbase’s initial action to freeze the suspicious account was appropriate, the exchange’s insistence on a court order—despite the submission of an affidavit and proof of ownership—was unfair.
