The official also stated that the U.S. president was joking during his recent speech when he spoke about “declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory,” and that the remarks did not represent a formal policy proposal by the Washington administration.
Trump said during a speech in Long Island, New York, on Friday evening that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz to be territory of the United States.
Following Trump’s remarks, which were widely described as absurd, Kazem Gharibabadi, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Deputy for Legal and International Affairs, wrote in a post on his personal X account: “Trump has said that after Iran’s defeat, he will soon declare the Strait of Hormuz to be U.S. territory! The Strait of Hormuz cannot be taken over by a tweet, an aircraft carrier, an executive order, or an election speech. Iran neither fears threats nor is intimidated by displays of power.”
