Egypt’s FM, U.S. Envoy Discuss Gaza Ceasefire and Iran’s Nuclear Program

According to Saed News, quoting IRNA, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry announced on its official website that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a telephone conversation yesterday with Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, discussing Iran and Gaza. The two sides reviewed regional developments, including the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip and issues related to Iran’s nuclear program.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khalaf stated that Abdelatty conveyed to Witkoff the latest updates regarding the Gaza ceasefire talks, particularly Hamas’ agreement to the U.S. envoy’s proposal. He emphasized the importance of Israel responding to this initiative and implementing its terms in order to resolve the current crisis, safeguard Israeli hostages, alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister underlined the necessity of seizing the current opportunity—Hamas’ approval of the U.S. proposal—to end the unjust war that has dragged on for nearly two years, and to use the 60-day ceasefire period to negotiate an end to the conflict and provide a just settlement of the Palestinian issue.

Khalaf added that Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm stance in supporting de-escalation in the Middle East and stressed that there is no military solution to Iran’s nuclear file or other regional crises. He highlighted Cairo’s ongoing contacts aimed at returning to negotiations to strengthen regional and international security and stability.

Abdelatty also stressed the importance of continued joint action between Egypt and the United States to achieve security, peace, and stability in the region, and to work toward ending decades of conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.

This discussion between Egypt’s Foreign Minister and the U.S. envoy comes as Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz yesterday approved a plan to attack Gaza City, presented to him by Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and the senior military command team, under the operation name “Gideon’s Chariots 2.”

Both parties in the call expressed deep concern over the ongoing genocide in Gaza, strongly condemned Israel’s illegal and criminal plan to militarily occupy Gaza City and forcibly displace its residents, and stressed the urgent need to stop the genocide and allow immediate humanitarian access to the Strip.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister also presented a report on Egypt and Qatar’s latest efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza. He referred to the upcoming emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers, scheduled next week in Jeddah at the official request of the Islamic Republic of Iran and other member states, to review developments in Palestine and Gaza. He described the meeting as an opportunity to coordinate positions and adopt practical measures to support the Palestinian people and confront Israel’s war-driven policies, particularly the dangerous “Greater Israel” plan aimed at occupying Islamic and Arab lands.
