Over 20 World Leaders, Including Iran and Russia, Expected at SCO Meeting in China

China’s Assistant Foreign Minister announced today that Beijing will soon host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, welcoming the President of Iran, the President of Russia, other member state leaders, and the UN Secretary-General.

According to Li Bin, speaking at a press conference on preparations for the SCO summit, the city will host António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and over 20 other leaders in August for a political and security meeting aimed at strengthening China’s regional influence.

Reuters reported that Li said the bloc’s leaders, representing roughly a quarter of the world’s population, will unveil new plans to deepen cooperation at the SCO summit scheduled for August 31 to September 1 in Tianjin.

The summit will occur just days before China holds one of its largest military parades in recent years on September 3. U.S. foreign and trade policies, particularly under President Donald Trump regarding Israel, Gaza, and regional tariffs, have increasingly directed key regional actors toward China.

Reuters also noted that Li confirmed invitations will be extended to Masoud Pezeshkian and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is also expected to attend ahead of hosting ASEAN leaders, including Trump, in October.

Li stressed that as the international situation grows more chaotic and difficult, strengthening unity and cooperation among nations becomes increasingly important. He added that the SCO’s stability and resilience can help address unpredictability and create favorable conditions for lasting peace.

The Assistant Foreign Minister confirmed that a joint Tianjin statement will be signed and published at the conclusion of the summit.
