Japanese Foreign Minister Calls for Restraint Amid Rising Tensions in the Middle East

SAEDNEWS: The Japanese foreign minister has held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, urging Tehran to exercise restraint amid the Israeli regime war on Gaza and Lebanon as well as the entire region.

According to SAEDNEWS, Japan's Foreign Minister, Iwaya Takeshi, has urged Iran to show restraint as tensions escalate in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon.

In a phone call on October 21 that lasted about 40 minutes, Minister Iwaya spoke with Iran's Foreign Minister, Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. Minister Araghchi started the conversation by congratulating Iwaya on his new role as Japan's Foreign Minister.

During the call, Minister Iwaya expressed Japan's deep concern over the rising tensions in the region, which have been intensified by recent hostilities, including an attack from Iran on Israel. He stressed that it is vital for all parties, including Iran, to exercise caution to prevent further escalation. Iwaya also requested Iran's assistance to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in light of the recent tensions.

In response, Minister Araghchi outlined Iran's perspective and assured Minister Iwaya that Iran would cooperate in protecting Japanese citizens.

The two ministers also discussed Iran’s nuclear situation. Iwaya emphasized the importance of Iran continuing to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Both sides agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue between Japan and Iran, including discussions at the foreign minister level, to promote peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s statement.
