SAEDNEWS: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei stated that Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing firmly oppose Europe’s attempt to revive UN sanctions through the snapback mechanism, stressing that only the UN Security Council has authority to decide on extending Resolution 2231.
According to Saed News, the spokesperson of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided clarifications regarding the possibility of extending Resolution 2231.
In his press conference today (Tuesday), Ismail Baghaei, responding to a question about the possibility of extending Resolution 2231, stated:
“We are in close contact with Russia and China. These two countries have declared their position in opposition to the move by the three European countries to reimpose UN Security Council sanctions. A joint letter was issued by the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and China on this matter, and we have a common stance.”
Baghaei added:
“The belief of the three countries is that the three European states have no legal authority to resort to the dispute resolution mechanism or to initiate the process of reinstating the canceled UN Security Council resolutions. Consequently, the issue of extension must also be considered alongside this matter.”
He further noted:
“The technical extension of Resolution 2231 is a matter that must be raised within the Security Council, as it is within its authority. We are in contact and consultation with China and Russia, and we are doing everything possible to achieve what serves Iran’s national interests.”
