Conservative Iranian Politician Urges Calm: NPT Exit Could Backfire

Conservative Iranian political figure Mansour Haghighatpour spoke with Etemad newspaper regarding Iran’s response to potential snapback sanctions.

Haghighatpour emphasized that the Iranian people have endured previous challenges, and despite deceptive actions by Europeans and Americans, Iran’s citizens will remain resilient. However, he stressed that some individuals and political factions should avoid hasty reactions, allowing national authorities to adopt the best strategic approach.

He appealed to the parliament to refrain from impulsive or harsh actions. If representatives have ideas, he suggested they should consult with the Supreme National Security Council, discussing proposals such as temporarily exiting the NPT or Additional Protocols. Haghighatpour underlined that such proposals require thorough analysis and cost-benefit evaluation.

He warned that rash actions, including leaving the NPT or closing the Strait of Hormuz, could increase Iran’s costs and provide adversaries with justification to pursue their hostile intentions.

Regarding the snapback mechanism, Haghighatpour noted that while it would not automatically justify a military attack on Iran, it could trigger economic pressures, inflation expectations, and related challenges. He concluded that political, strategic, and economic authorities must anticipate all possibilities and prepare accordingly.
