SAEDNEWS: Iran is counting on Russia, China, and aligned Security Council members to prevent the automatic reinstatement of UN resolutions via the snapback mechanism, though current projections suggest insufficient support to block it.
According to Saed News, Iran hopes that during the one-month period, Russia, China, and some other countries aligned with Iran that currently hold membership in the UN Security Council, can somehow prevent the reactivation of previous resolutions.
Russia and China have officially declared their support for Iran’s position regarding the lack of competence of European countries to activate the snapback mechanism. Moscow has emphasized that it will not recognize the reinstatement of these resolutions.
However, it remains unclear to what extent this support from Russia and China can prevent the reimplementation of Chapter VII Security Council resolutions against Iran by 26 September.
The newspaper added that, under current circumstances, there does not appear to be sufficient votes to prevent the snapback mechanism from being put on the agenda. Since the snapback mechanism is considered an automatic process, if Iran cannot secure procedural majority support from Council members to block it, the previous resolutions will automatically come back into effect after 30 days in the absence of a new agreement.
