One of the most important historical sites in Kish is Kariz Underground City. In fact, it is a vast qanat system covering approximately 10,000 square meters and located about 16 meters underground.
Kariz dates back around 2,500 years. Its walls are covered with seashells and marine coral fossils. According to local guides, some of these fossils are estimated to be between 270 and 570 million years old.
Today, Kariz Underground City features facilities such as restaurants, cafés, a traditional marketplace, a photography studio, and guided tours, making it an interesting place to experience Kish’s ancient heritage.
In 1966, a large British-built vessel known as the Koula F ran aground near the village of Baghou. The 7,061-ton ship belonged to Greek owners and became stranded because of a technical problem.
Despite extensive efforts by the Greek owners to rescue the vessel, the attempts were unsuccessful. Today, the Greek Ship has become one of Kish’s most recognizable landmarks and attracts many visitors. Its windcatchers and overall architectural style resemble traditional buildings found in Yazd. Because the structure features two domes, it is commonly known as the Twin Water Reservoir.
