SAEDNEWS: A 55-year-old woman from Manchester, who had been living with peripheral artery disease, recently underwent surgery to have her left leg amputated. Following the life-changing procedure, she chose to have the skin from her amputated limb transformed into a custom-made handbag.
According to Saednews reports, an online marketplace that connects brands with manufacturers received an unusual request from a 55-year-old woman who wanted to transform the skin from her amputated leg into a custom handbag.
Rather than dismissing the request, the company's specialists decided to investigate whether such a project could be carried out. The woman, identified only as Joan, explained that she struggled with the idea of her amputated leg being treated as medical waste after surgery. Wanting to preserve a part of herself, she came up with the unconventional idea of creating a handbag from the skin.
In her message, Joan wrote:
"I know it sounds strange, and some people may think I'm crazy, but it's my leg, and I can't bear the thought of simply throwing it away. It's a part of me, and I want to keep it."
She also added:
"I realize it may seem unpleasant, but people keep their babies' umbilical cords and display the ashes of loved ones. When you think about it that way, it doesn't seem so unusual."
Joan said she had set aside around £3,000 (approximately $3,900) for the project but was willing to increase her budget if necessary. For her, the priority is finding someone capable of turning her unusual idea into reality.
She is currently in discussions with the hospital to determine whether she will be allowed to keep her amputated leg after the operation, a necessary step before the project can proceed.
