The Photograph That Stunned the World

According to Saed News, citing ISNA, Thích Quảng Đức was a Buddhist monk who, in 1963, set himself on fire in protest against the South Vietnamese government’s policies toward Buddhist monks, and died as a result.

He self-immolated at a busy intersection in the center of Saigon (present-day Ho Chi Minh City). The event occurred while Malcolm Browne, an American news photographer, was present at the scene to document the moment.

Browne’s powerful photograph sparked widespread global media attention and helped draw international focus to the situation of Buddhists in South Vietnam. The image also earned him a Pulitzer Prize.

John F. Kennedy reportedly commented on the photograph, saying that “no news picture in history has generated as much emotion around the world as this one.”

After Thích Quảng Đức’s death, his body was cremated again, but his heart was reportedly left intact and preserved as a symbol of bodhisattva compassion.
