SAEDNEWS: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the international order collapses not only because of aggression, but also when the use of force becomes normalized and the world remains silent.
According to Saednews, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has warned that the international order collapses not only through acts of aggression but also when the use of force becomes normalized and the world remains silent. He made the remarks in response to new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In a social media post, Baghaei reacted to the latest US sanctions targeting the ICC and threats to dismantle the international judicial body.
“Rubio threatens to dismantle the ICC ‘brick by brick’ if U.S. allies fail to rein it in,” Baghaei wrote.
“Remember the 1930s: international orders collapse not only through aggression, but when the use of force becomes normalized and the world remains silent.”
Addressing European countries, he questioned whether supporting an alliance meant defending international law and the post-World War II legal and institutional framework or standing alongside the United States as it dismantles them.
“Europe! Does standing by an alliance mean defending international law and the post-WWII normative and institutional framework—or standing with the U.S. as it dismantles them?” he asked.
Baghaei concluded by warning that sacrificing law and justice to appease an aggressive ally would undermine international principles.
“If law and justice are sacrificed to appease an aggressive ally, any talk of human rights and a rules-based international order becomes nothing more than empty rhetoric,” he said.
