The report identifies Iran’s asserted control over the Strait of Hormuz as its most important gain. Around 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through the waterway. Iran is said to have secured control of the vital route and is negotiating with Oman over collecting fees for ships using it.
Iran has also launched extensive attacks on US military bases in the Persian Gulf, leaving those facilities highly vulnerable and raising the possibility that they could be moved outside the region.
Tehran is demanding the complete withdrawal of US forces from the region and has made the lifting of sanctions a key condition for any agreement.
According to Newsweek, Iran’s most significant strategic achievement is challenging longstanding assumptions about the Middle East’s balance of power. Regional states such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have reassessed their view of US security commitments.
