According to the Politics Desk of the Saed News Agency, the US President’s Special Envoy stated that the United States and Iran are not currently negotiating, emphasizing that the two countries have nevertheless had contacts.
According to ISNA, Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy of US President Donald Trump, announced that Washington is not presently engaged in negotiations with Iran, but contacts have been exchanged between the two sides.
In an interview with CNBC in Davos, Switzerland, he said: “Obviously, any agreement must cover missiles, uranium enrichment, and related materials.”
Trump’s special envoy stated that he believes an agreement with Iran must be reached; otherwise, “difficult days lie ahead for the entire world. We hope a consensus can be achieved.”
Iran has repeatedly stressed that, under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), it has the right to peaceful nuclear energy and that it will not negotiate over its defensive capabilities.
He also said it was difficult to say whether Iran is still “killing protesters” or not.
The Iranian government has stated that it recognizes peaceful protests by the Iranian people and has pledged that efforts to engage in dialogue over livelihood-related concerns of different segments of society and to address them will continue.
Following the violent incidents of 8 and 9 January, Iranian officials announced that they possess evidence of links between terrorist elements among ordinary people and American and Israeli regime agents, as well as their role in fomenting unrest. They said this evidence would be presented later and pursued through competent domestic and international legal authorities.
In the same interview, the US President’s Special Envoy said that significant progress has been made in recent weeks toward talks between Ukraine and Russia, although disagreements over territorial issues remain the biggest obstacle.
Witkoff said: “In recent weeks, a lot of progress has been made on the issue of Ukraine and Russia.” However, he emphasized that “agreements related to territorial concessions and land issues are the biggest point of contention” on the path to a peace deal.
Trump’s special envoy also stated: “All parties want to reach a peace agreement,” adding that “Russia has requested to hold a meeting with us.”
In another part of the interview, he said it is necessary to hold a meeting with Vladimir Putin on Thursday, stressing: “I think Putin will reach an agreement.” Witkoff also announced that he is set to travel to Moscow with Jared Kushner, with the trip beginning on Thursday.
According to Witkoff, the United States is currently in contact with “20 and perhaps 25 world leaders” who have previously agreed to an initiative known as the “Peace Delegation.” He did not provide further details about the composition or mission of this delegation.
Trump’s special envoy also touched on Greenland, saying: “Greenland is strategically important for the United States.” He added that “discussions about Greenland will be raised at the Davos meeting.”
