SAEDNEWS: Fasting expiation (Kaffarah) is required to make up for fasts that have been intentionally broken or missed due to a valid religious excuse. There are different forms of expiation, and the appropriate one depends on the individual’s circumstances.

When Is the Right Time to Pay the Fasting Expiation (Kaffarah)?

According to Saednewes, As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, some people may still have an outstanding kaffarah (expiation) for missed fasts from the previous year. According to religious rulings issued by Islamic scholars, a person should not neglect paying the kaffarah, although it is not necessary to pay it immediately.

The amount of kaffarah for an unintentional missed fast has been announced as 16,000 tomans, while the kaffarah for an intentionally broken fast has been set at 960,000 tomans (based on the rates announced for Eid al-Fitr 1403 in the Iranian calendar). It has also been emphasized that kaffarah payments should be distributed among people in need.

Types of Kaffarah for Fasting

Kaffarah for Intentionally Breaking a Fast

If someone deliberately breaks their fast during Ramadan, they must fulfill one of the following:

  • Freeing an enslaved person.

  • Fasting for two consecutive months, with 31 days of continuous fasting.

  • Feeding 60 people in need, giving each person one mudd of food—approximately 750 grams of wheat, barley, flour, rice, dates, or raisins.

Kaffarah Related to Making Up Missed Fasts

If someone is unable to fast because of a valid religious excuse, such as illness, travel, or pregnancy, they must make up the missed fasts later.

If making up the missed fasts is delayed until the following Ramadan, in addition to making up the fasts, the person must give one mudd of food to a person in need for each missed day.

Kaffarah for Delaying Missed Fasts

If a person delays making up missed Ramadan fasts until the following Ramadan without a valid religious excuse, they must make up the fasts and give one mudd of food to a person in need for each day.

When Should Kaffarah Be Paid?

It is preferable to pay the kaffarah as soon as reasonably possible.

Kaffarah for delaying missed fasts may be paid after Ramadan and before the following Ramadan.

Kaffarah donations made through charitable organizations may also have specific deadlines. People who are unable to fast during Ramadan because of illness, old age, or pregnancy may be required to pay kaffarah according to the applicable religious ruling. Such payments should generally be made before the end of Ramadan, depending on the specific ruling being followed.

Important Points

  • The amount of food kaffarah is equivalent to one mudd of food for each missed day.

  • Depending on the applicable religious ruling, kaffarah may be given in the form of food or its monetary equivalent.

  • If a person is unable to pay the kaffarah, they should seek forgiveness from God.

  • The rules may differ depending on the reason for missing the fast and the religious authority being followed.

What Is the Appropriate Time to Pay Fasting Kaffarah?

In general, kaffarah should be paid within the timeframe specified by the relevant religious ruling. For people who owe kaffarah for delayed missed fasts, it is advisable not to postpone the payment unnecessarily and to ensure that it is fulfilled before the applicable deadline.
