According to Saednews, GasBuddy data indicates that the national average gasoline price could climb to $4.03 per gallon on Monday, surpassing the previous Labor Day record of $3.83, which was set in 2012.
Labor Day is a federal holiday that recognizes the US labor movement and traditionally brings increased travel across the country during the long weekend.
On Thursday, the national average gasoline price was around $4.13 per gallon, according to GasBuddy—nearly $1 more than the average recorded at the same time last year.
Analysts speaking to Reuters described the $4-per-gallon level as a significant “pain point” for American consumers.
With the US conflict with Iran entering its seventh month, higher energy prices have emerged as a major concern for the administration of President Donald Trump as the November midterm elections approach.
