Saed News: Mumps is a contagious disease, and most people infected with it do not experience any symptoms. Symptoms of mumps appear after 14 to 24 days in the form of headache, weakness, mild fever, etc. One of the complications of this disease is male infertility.
According to SAEDNEWS, mumps is a contagious viral disease that mainly affects the salivary glands located under and behind the ears. In most cases, in addition to the salivary glands, the disease can also spread to the ovaries, testicles, and pancreas.
This condition is more commonly seen in children over 2 years old and, less frequently, in adults as well. Symptoms of this disease include headache, swelling of the salivary glands, inflammation of lymph nodes, watery eyes, and runny nose, and the duration of the disease is 14 to 21 days.
This disease has many complications, including meningitis, which in Persian is called “brain inflammation.” Meningitis is the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. If a patient develops fever, headache, vomiting, and neck stiffness during or after the illness, it is due to the mumps virus attacking the brain or its protective membranes, and the patient must be hospitalized immediately. Meningitis may lead to permanent hearing loss.
Symptoms of Mumps
In this disease, sometimes during puberty, boys may experience swelling of the testicles, which occurs about one week after the onset of mumps. This condition between the ages of 14 to 35 causes fever and pain in the testicles and may lead to infertility and sterility.
Complications of Mumps and Methods of Treatment
This disease also has herbal treatments. Some medicinal plants can reduce and ease the pain caused by this disease. Some of them are mentioned below:
Fig: To prevent complications of mumps, figs can be used because this fruit has antiviral properties and may help control the disease.
Aloe vera: This plant is suitable for inflammation and reduces swelling caused by mumps.
Asparagus: This plant is used to relieve severe pain and inflammation caused by this condition.
Ginger: Ginger has antiviral properties, so its use may help in recovery.
Fenugreek: Another effective plant for treating mumps is fenugreek seeds, which are anti-inflammatory and antiviral and play an important role in improving the patient’s condition.
One of the actions we can take for patients is to monitor body temperature. If the patient’s temperature is high, it should be reduced. Warm foods and mostly liquids, and foods such as soup that are easier to swallow, should be consumed.
To relieve dry mouth, warm liquids, preferably milk, can be used. The patient can also use a hot water bag wrapped in a towel on the painful and inflamed area.
Parents should consult a doctor for diagnosis and confirmation of the disease. Also, if the disease worsens after 10 days and symptoms such as headache or neck stiffness appear, medical attention is necessary.
Complications of Mumps and Causes of Infection
A virus called paramyxovirus is the cause of mumps. This virus is transmitted through the mouth in situations such as saliva released while speaking, sneezing, sharing drinks, kissing, or coughing. The virus can also settle on surfaces that others later touch. When the virus reaches your hands, it can find its way into the mouth, especially in children.
