According to Saed News Society Desk, researchers have discovered that the monk lived approximately 1,100 years ago. The finding is of great cultural and historical significance, as this is the only Buddha statue in the West that has undergone such an examination.

Endoscopic tests revealed that the mummy’s skeleton once contained internal organs, which were later replaced with unidentified materials and papers inscribed with Chinese characters.

Scientists are now conducting DNA tests on the bones of the mummified monk. Experts at the Drents Museum suspect that the statue may be the result of the monk’s “self-mummification.” This ancient practice, once observed among some Asian monks, involved a strict dietary regimen combined with the consumption of toxic substances to induce extreme malnutrition. As death approached, the monk—seeking to preserve his body for the long term—would be buried by others.
