SAEDNEWS: Saqqara / سقاره / Saqqara Saqqara is a vast ancient burial site in Egypt, where the deceased of the capital, Memphis, were laid to rest.
According to the History and Culture Service of Saed News, this site is home to numerous pyramids, including the world-famous Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser. Many mastabas are also scattered across the area. Covering an area of approximately seven by one and a half square kilometers, it is located 30 kilometers south of modern Cairo. The name “Saqqara” comes from the Saqqar tribe, who historically inhabited the region.
Saqqara contains the oldest large-scale stone building complex ever constructed in human history. High-ranking officials from every period of Egypt’s dynastic history built tombs for themselves here. For nearly three thousand years, this area served as a burial ground for ordinary citizens and elite figures alike, a tradition that continued even after the end of the Pharaonic era, during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
The remnants of the palace traditionally attributed to Egypt’s revered figure, Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zuleikha, are also located in Saqqara. Today, the site has become one of Egypt’s most visited tourist attractions.
