SAEDNEWS: A massive outage knocked out power to 130,000 homes and businesses in San Francisco, California.
A massive outage cut electricity to 130,000 homes and businesses in San Francisco, California, on Saturday, leaving millions without power after a fire broke out at a substation, according to local reports.
The blackout affected a large portion of the city’s northern neighborhoods, beginning in Richmond, Presidio, and areas around Golden Gate Park in the early afternoon before spreading further, The Associated Press reported.
San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management confirmed on X that the outage impacted Richmond, Sunset, Presidio, and Golden Gate Park.
In a city of roughly 800,000 residents, the outage prompted authorities to advise calling 9-1-1 only for life-threatening emergencies, avoiding unnecessary travel, and treating non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops.
Residents were also urged to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed and to turn off major appliances to prevent potential power surges during the outage.
