US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Witkoff will hold meetings with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin this weekend, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources.
According to sources, Witkoff will meet with negotiators from the UK, Germany, and France on Sunday and Monday. The decision to send Witkoff to Berlin reflects the US administration’s desire to bridge differences between Washington and Kyiv over the terms of a peace deal, the newspaper said.
French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, along with their advisers, are expected to participate in the Berlin talks, WSJ added. Initially, European leaders had hoped to meet with former President Donald Trump this weekend to discuss their proposals for a US peace plan.
Trump previously stated that the US would send a representative to the European meeting only if Washington believed the negotiations would be productive.
