Commission Finalizes Draft on Iran’s NPT Withdrawal; Parliament Yet to Decide

In an interview with Tasnim, Iranian Parliament member Ebrahim Rezaei stated that following the European troika’s triggering of the snapback mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal, multiple Parliament members have proposed Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), with around 15 draft plans submitted so far. One plan has been finalized but has not yet been placed on the Parliament’s agenda.

ccording to the proposal, if the snapback mechanism is activated, Iran would formally notify the IAEA Board of Governors of its NPT withdrawal. Rezaei argued that Iran has received no benefit from NPT membership or cooperation with the IAEA, despite complying with extensive inspections, and therefore has no reason to remain in the treaty. He also emphasized that withdrawal requires national consensus and cannot be dictated by the President, highlighting Parliament’s independence in the matter.
