Iran’s Foreign Minister Araqchi: Talks Possible Only if U.S. Halts Military Strikes

“I am told by people: don’t waste your time, don’t be deceived,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in an interview with the Financial Times, when asked about possible negotiations with the United States. Araqchi stressed that Tehran remains ready to engage in dialogue, but only if Washington guarantees that no military attacks will occur during the talks.

According to Saed News, Araqchi’s remarks come against the backdrop of indirect negotiations between Iran and the U.S., launched earlier in 2025 with Omani mediation. While the process was still ongoing, Israel attacked Iran, followed days later by U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Referring to the damage caused by these American strikes, Araqchi added that Iran also expects the Trump administration to acknowledge responsibility and pay compensation for the losses inflicted by the war. However, Washington has not only refused to admit wrongdoing but also dismissed Tehran’s demand for reparations as “ridiculous.”

The Financial Times reported that analysts warn the continuing diplomatic deadlock increases the risk of a new cycle of conflict. Quoting a Western diplomat, the paper wrote: “Another round of confrontation may erupt because military operations have solved nothing.”

Previously, Araqchi had underlined Iran’s full readiness in the face of any potential aggression by the U.S. or Israel, stating: “I don’t think they will repeat such an action. But if they do, they will face a response from us that is equally strong, if not stronger.”
