SAEDNEWS: In 1891, Petřín Tower was built for the Jubilee Exhibition. Standing about 200 feet tall, its design was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Located on Petřín Hill, the tower rises to an elevation of 1,043 feet, making it one of the most prominent landmarks in the Czech Republic.
According to Saednews, Petřín Tower is one of Prague’s most recognizable landmarks, standing on Petřín Hill and offering spectacular 360-degree views across the Czech capital. Rising about 63.5 meters above the hill, the iron observation tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris and is roughly one-fifth its height.
The idea for Petřín Tower came from members of the Czech Tourist Club, particularly Vilém Kurz and Vojtěch Náprstek, who were inspired by the Eiffel Tower. The project was developed by engineers František Prášil and Julius Souček.
Construction began in March 1891 in connection with the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague. The tower was completed later that year and opened to the public in August 1891. Its design consists of an octagonal central structure surrounded by two spiral staircases. Visitors can climb 299 steps to reach the observation areas, while an elevator provides an alternative for those who prefer not to use the stairs.
The main attraction is undoubtedly the panoramic view from the top. On a clear day, visitors can see Prague’s historic center, the Vltava River, castles, churches, bridges, and surrounding countryside.
The tower has two observation platforms, allowing visitors to enjoy views from different levels. Its elevated position on Petřín Hill makes the tower appear much taller than its actual architectural height.
Petřín Tower also includes a café and an elevator, making the attraction suitable for a wide range of visitors. The surrounding hill is itself a pleasant place to explore, with walking paths, gardens, and scenic viewpoints.
Petřín Hill can be reached on foot, with the walk taking around 30 minutes depending on the route. Another popular option is the funicular railway, which takes visitors toward the top of the hill.
