According to Saednews, At the time it was built, this castle was not as isolated as it appears today. The surrounding area was highly fertile, thanks to abundant water resources and dense vegetation. A monastery known as Santa Maria del Monte was also located nearby, and it is believed that the castle took its name from it.
The only surviving document related to the construction of Castel del Monte dates back to the reign of Frederick II and is believed to have been issued around 1240 AD. In the document, the emperor instructed the governor of Capitanata to carry out a number of works at the castle.
The exact nature of these works remains uncertain, and it is not even clear whether Frederick II ever personally used the castle. However, historical evidence suggests that the fortress was being used as a prison by 1246. Later, during outbreaks of plague, the site reportedly served as a refuge for survivors.
The castle's distinctive octagonal design has long been a subject of debate among historians and scholars. Frederick II was responsible for the construction of numerous castles throughout the region, yet none of them features the same unusual eight-sided design as Castel del Monte.
Some historians believe that the octagonal shape represents a connection between the square, symbolizing the Earth, and the circle, representing the heavens. Frederick II may have been inspired by the domes he encountered in Jerusalem during the Crusades, or perhaps by the architecture of Aachen Cathedral.
The castle once contained beautifully decorated rooms featuring marble floors, columns, mosaics, paintings, and ornate tapestries. Unfortunately, these original decorations were destroyed during the 18th century.
In the 1990s, Castel del Monte was recognized as an outstanding masterpiece of medieval architecture and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
