SAEDNEWS: Iran’s UN mission warns that the Security Council must either support the Russia-China draft resolution for a technical extension of the nuclear deal or face severe consequences, emphasizing that the European Troika has lost legitimacy to trigger the snapback mechanism.
According to SaedNews, citing ISNA, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations wrote on social media platform X on Thursday: “Members of the UN Security Council are at a decisive moment: either support the Russia-China draft resolution for a technical extension and continuation of diplomacy or trigger the snapback mechanism, creating severe consequences.”
The message continued: “The European Troika’s response to this draft will ultimately reveal whether they are truly committed to diplomacy or intend to escalate the crisis.”
This statement comes as the three European countries that are members of the JCPOA—Germany, the United Kingdom, and France, known as the European Troika—sent a letter on Thursday to the UN Security Council members, announcing that they had activated the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran.
The snapback mechanism, included in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, allows the parties to the deal to restore international sanctions against a country if it is claimed to be “non-compliant.” According to the JCPOA text, this mechanism is only valid if all parties are adhering to their commitments.
Iranian officials emphasize that the three European countries, due to failing to fulfill economic commitments and remaining silent regarding U.S. actions, have lost the legitimacy to use this mechanism.
Iran also stressed that Europe, for not adhering to its obligations under the nuclear deal, lacks the legal and moral basis to activate this mechanism against Iran. Tehran has stated that it will respond to Europe’s action to reinstate sanctions.
