SAEDNEWS: The United States has welcomed the European initiative to trigger the snapback mechanism under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, emphasizing its readiness for diplomacy while warning Iran that its response to renewed sanctions will be severe.

US Welcomes European Move to Restore UN Sanctions on Iran

The U.S. Department of State on Thursday evening, in a statement quoting Secretary of State Marco Rubio, announced that the United States welcomes the action of three European countries to begin the process of reinstating UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

According to SAED NEWS, the statement said: “Today, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have initiated a process under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to restore sanctions against Iran. These European allies have provided a clear record of Iran’s continued significant non-compliance with its nuclear obligations.”

The U.S. State Department added: “As President Trump directed in National Security Memorandum 2, the United States appreciates the leadership of our European allies in this path and will work in the coming weeks with them and other Security Council members to complete the process of reinstating international sanctions and restrictions against Iran.”

The U.S. Secretary of State further claimed: “The United States remains ready for direct dialogue with Iran to pursue a peaceful and sustainable solution to Iran’s nuclear issue. The return of sanctions does not conflict with our readiness for diplomacy; rather, it strengthens it.”

Rubio concluded by addressing Iranian authorities: “I call on Iran’s leaders to take the immediate necessary steps to ensure their country never acquires nuclear weapons, to follow the path of peace, and work for a better future for the Iranian people.”

Rubio’s claim comes despite Iranian officials and even officials from Trump’s second administration affirming that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful.

Meanwhile, while he speaks of the U.S.’s readiness to negotiate with Iran, Trump repeatedly praised the actions of the Israeli regime and the United States against the Iranian people, describing negotiations with Iran as a “deceptive” policy.

Iranian officials have consistently emphasized that they seek diplomacy. One of Tehran’s key conditions for resuming indirect talks with Washington is a specific guarantee that Iran will not be attacked during the negotiations.

However, in light of the Western countries’ decision under the JCPOA to trigger the snapback mechanism, Iranian officials have emphasized that the country’s response to the reinstatement of sanctions will be “severe.”
