The Relationship Between Traditional Iranian Art and the Treatment of Mental Health Disorders

According to Saednews, A close look at Iranian arts shows that art therapy is not limited to a few specific fields. In fact, many forms of art may provide opportunities for treating psychological and emotional disorders in patients.

The Main Mission of Art: Expressing Inner Pain and Beauty

A ceramic artist believes that the primary mission of art is to express inner pains and beauties in different forms. He explains that art manifests itself in thought and in the form of an artistic object, and this is the foundation of the development of modern global art.

Iraj Golzari Jamil says pottery, as one of the earliest prehistoric arts and crafts in the world, holds a special place. Today, in addition to its artistic and practical aspects, it is also used in many developed countries as art therapy. He adds that the ability to combine this art with other industries and its use in architecture is one of its unique features, reflecting creativity and the manifestation of thought and ideas. He emphasizes that using art is a reliable method for improving human health in today’s society, where people face numerous problems and challenges.

Handicrafts as a Treatment for Mental Disorders

The Director General of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism of Hamadan Province refers to the Behbood Institute, a rehabilitation center, as a suitable environment for art therapy in Alborz.

He states that talented women at this institute suffer from mental, physical, and intellectual disorders. The department has been teaching pottery, painted ceramics, leatherwork, knitting, and traditional embroidery at the institute for two years.

He reports successful and effective training programs and notes that part of the handicrafts produced by these women is purchased by visitors who come to support the patients. A booth is also planned for national handicraft exhibitions to showcase their products. He emphasizes that handicraft activities, especially pottery, have had a significant positive impact on the mental health and recovery of these patients.

Improvement of Schizophrenia Patients Through Handicrafts in Alborz

The Director General of Cultural Heritage in Alborz considers the treatment of schizophrenia patients through relief sculpture pottery as one of the valuable initiatives of the department in 2012.

He explains that this initiative was carried out through a training agreement between the Alborz Handicrafts Department and the Revival Association, aimed at teaching selected handicraft skills to individuals under the association’s care.

Experts believe that occupational therapy and art therapy are among the most effective methods for improving schizophrenia patients. The association is responsible for caring for these patients. He stresses that patients should not become isolated after treatment.

Under this agreement, selected handicraft fields are taught by instructors based on standardized methods to support these goals. In the first phase, training was provided in relief pottery and traditional leatherwork. The program also aims to create employment opportunities, provide official certification, and support the full recovery and social reintegration of these patients.
