SAEDNEWS: Sunni Cleric Molavi Yousef Gorgij Assassinated by Unknown Gunmen in Zahedan
According to Saednews, Gorgij, the Friday prayer leader of the Mohammad Rasulullah (PBUH) Mosque in Zahedan, has succumbed to injuries sustained in an armed attack.
Gorgij was a regular participant in revolutionary and martyr commemorative ceremonies. During the US-Israeli imposed war of aggression, he also repeatedly addressed gatherings held in the streets.
He is the second Sunni cleric to be killed by unknown assailants in Sistan and Baluchestan Province this year. Earlier, Molavi Mohammad Anvar Rigi, the Sunni Friday prayer leader of Mirjaveh, was killed in an assassination attack.
Speaking to Tasnim, Zahedan Police Chief Hamid Nouri said that Gorgij had been targeted and assassinated by armed individuals.
Nouri said police officers arrived at the scene immediately after receiving reports of the incident and launched preliminary investigations, along with specialized measures to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“Identifying and arresting the perpetrator or perpetrators of this act is on the police agenda, and police and intelligence investigations into the incident are ongoing,” Nouri said.
Meanwhile, the public relations office of the Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force said terrorist groups had turned to assassinating prominent and respected figures and clerics following what it described as repeated defeats and the dismantling of several terrorist teams in Sistan and Baluchestan.
The statement referred to the groups as “treacherous terrorist groups” and said their resort to such attacks came after a series of successive failures.
