Fath Abad Garden / Beiglarbegi Garden

Introduction to Fath Abad Garden: Fath Abad Garden, also called Beiglarbegi Garden, is a beautiful and prosperous garden built by Fazl Ali Khan Beiglarbegi, a ruler of Kerman. The construction of this garden dates back to 1255 AH. Its construction began during the reign of Mohammad Shah Qajar and was completed after five years. Later rulers of Kerman used the garden for rest and leisure. The historical site is part of the endowment of Rostam Khan Amiri, a descendant of Fazl Ali Khan Beiglarbegi.

In recent years, the garden has been restored. Although Fath Abad Garden is part of the waqf (endowment) properties of Kerman, the restoration has been supervised by the Cultural Heritage Organization.

Fath Abad Garden is not only beautiful during the day but also at night, thanks to its stunning lighting. This historical monument was added to the National Heritage List of Iran in 2003.

Architecture and Different Sections of Fath Abad Garden: The garden spans 13 hectares, and its building covers 1,500 square meters. The garden includes various sections, such as the main mansion, the Museum of Rulers, a painting room, the Four Seasons Mansion, southern buildings, herbal medicine cultivation areas, and an outer courtyard.

Main Mansion: Upon entering the Fath Abad mansion, the first thing you’ll notice is a large pool, where the reflection of the mansion on the water is truly captivating. The mansion, which has two floors, is located at the northern end of the garden. It features arches on both sides and rooms with three and five windows. The mansion is made from raw brick and mud mortar, covered with a layer of plaster. Inside the building, there are beautiful plasterwork details created by skilled artisans. Above the entrance to the mansion, there are small openings where magnifying glasses were once placed to illuminate the room by reflecting the light from lamps.

Museum of Rulers: If you’re interested in history, this room invites you on a historical journey through Kerman. It features a museum dedicated to past rulers of Kerman, displaying their biographies and portraits.

Painting Room: The painting room, located in the main mansion, used to be the residence of the Kerman ruler. The room features exquisite paintings created with gold water.

Four Seasons Mansion: The Four Seasons Mansion is located 30 meters east of the main mansion. It is a single-story building with a central dome and columned verandas, showcasing beautiful brickwork and plastering.

Water Pool: The qanat water passing through the middle of this magnificent garden and the presence of the Four Seasons Mansion, central mansion, towers, and walls make the garden a beautiful and delightful place. The central water pool, a typical feature of ancient Iranian gardens, is present in Fath Abad as well. The role of water in shaping the garden is significant; its absence would have caused the garden and mansion to deteriorate.

Herbal Medicine Cultivation Areas: Kerman is famous for its herbal medicines, which are one of the main souvenirs of the province. During the restoration of Fath Abad Garden, part of the garden was dedicated to cultivating medicinal plants, not only for utilizing the surrounding land but also to generate income for the site. Currently, Fath Abad Garden hosts the largest collection of medicinal plant cultivation in the country, and its plant diversity is unparalleled.

Best Time to Visit Fath Abad Garden: From early May to late June, you will experience the best weather in Kerman and Fath Abad Garden. Most visitors choose the colder months to travel to Kerman. The coldest months are December and January, and if you can tolerate the cold, seeing the beautiful Beiglarbegi Mansion covered in snow is a sight not to be missed.

Restoration of Fath Abad Garden: Fath Abad Garden was once a gathering place for addicts and thugs, and it had become a ruin until the governor of Kerman visited the site and ordered its restoration. This marked the first significant step towards reviving Fath Abad Garden.

Alireza Razm Hosseini, the former governor of Kerman, mentioned during his visit:

"This garden is 180 years old, and the first time I visited, a bulldozer was present to demolish part of the historical site. We asked the person responsible for the demolition, and it turned out that he believed the bricks of the building were suitable for farming, so he intended to transfer them to his garden."

Fortunately, after the restoration work, Fath Abad Garden has become one of the most beautiful gardens in Iran, captivating all who see it. The qanat in the building had completely dried up, but with the construction of a well and installation of a water purification system, water was restored to the site. The restoration has also created a center of historical significance, becoming a research, agricultural, and leisure hub for the people. Fath Abad Garden now grows 400 species of medicinal plants from Kerman province, making it an important plant repository in the country.
