Trump Administration Abandons Annual US Hunger Report as Food Aid Faces Major Cuts

Just weeks after President Donald Trump signed legislation reducing food assistance programs, potentially leaving 3 million Americans without SNAP benefits, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it will discontinue the Household Food Security Report. The 2024 edition, set for release on October 22, will be the last.

The USDA defended the decision, claiming the report’s methodology is “entirely subjective” and fails to reflect actual food security, citing improvements in poverty rates, wages, and job growth under the current administration.

Critics, however, argue the move undermines oversight of hunger. Bobby Kogan from the Center for American Progress warned the administration is following a playbook of manipulating reports to avoid showing rising hunger, raising concerns about transparency and accountability in social welfare monitoring.

The decision comes as the Census Bureau reported a slight drop in poverty, from 11% in 2023 to 10.6% last year, prior to Trump taking office, but critics say eliminating the report silences essential data on food insecurity.
