Cooking Tutorial: How to Make Quick Japanese Mochi – A New Dessert with a Simple Method

According to the Family Magazine section of Saed News, cooking is a skill and technique used to prepare food. A person who cooks is called a chef. While cooking is a daily necessity for providing energy and satisfying hunger, it is also considered an art that involves knowledge of ingredients, the craft of seasoning (marinating), baking, sauces, and more—each reflecting the creativity and talent of a skilled cook.

Cooking and cuisine are major aspects of every culture. In large countries like Iran, each ethnic group has its own unique culinary traditions. Some cooking styles even trace back to cultural interactions and wars, such as the origin of pizza, which historical accounts suggest was first made during the Greco-Persian Wars using available ingredients and rustic cheese on warriors' shields.

How to Make Japanese Mochi

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup milk

  • ½ cup glutinous rice flour

  • ⅓ cup fine granulated sugar

  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract

  • Nutella and strawberries (as needed)

🍽️ Instructions:

  1. Mix the Ingredients:

    • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk, glutinous rice flour, sugar, and vanilla.

    • Stir well until smooth and no lumps remain.

  2. Cook the Mochi Dough:

    • Microwave the mixture for 1 minute.

    • Remove and stir it well.

    • Microwave again for another 1 minute. Stir again until the dough becomes thick, sticky, and slightly translucent.
(Microwave times may vary slightly depending on your device—adjust accordingly.)

  3. Cool and Shape:

    • Let the dough cool slightly so it’s safe to touch.

    • Lightly dust a clean surface (or your hands) with cornstarch or potato starch to prevent sticking.

    • Divide the dough into small portions and flatten each piece into a disc.

  4. Add the Filling:

    • Place a small spoonful of Nutella (and a strawberry slice, if using) in the center of each disc.

    • Carefully fold the edges over the filling and pinch to seal.

  5. Chill & Serve:

    • Refrigerate for about 15–20 minutes so the mochi can firm up.

    • Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • You can get creative with fillings—try peanut butter, red bean paste, chocolate chips, or fruit jam.

  • For best texture, enjoy the mochi the same day it's made.
