A Royal Joke with Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar in Tehran’s Coziest Café / What a Beautiful and Shiny Cloak!

According to the Historical Service of Saed News, citing Sophia News, Naser al-Din Shah Qajar was the fourth king of Iran from the Qajar dynasty. He was the son of Mohammad Shah, the third Qajar king. He ruled from 1848 to 1896, with nearly 50 years of reign—the longest reign among all Qajar kings. To honor his half-century rule over Iran, he called himself “Sahebgharan.” Naser al-Din Shah’s reign was the last era of absolute monarchy in Iran. He was the first Iranian king to lead a ruling delegation to modern Europe. Seyyed Ali Mohammad Bab, the founder of the Babi faith, was executed by his order. Naser al-Din Shah also had his first prime minister, Amir Kabir, assassinated, despite Amir Kabir’s significant administrative, financial, and cultural reforms.

In May 1896 (Ordibehesht 1275 in the Iranian calendar), just before the ceremony marking his fiftieth year on the throne, Naser al-Din Shah was assassinated at age 64 by Mirza Reza Kermani, a follower of Seyyed Jamal al-Din Asadabadi. He was buried in the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim in the city of Rey, south of Tehran. In the early 1990s, when the Golestan Museum in the Golestan Palace was reopened, his gravestone—which had been saved from destruction by revolutionary forces led by Sadegh Khalkhali and transferred to the museum storage—was publicly displayed in the Karimkhani Hall.

With the help of artificial intelligence, we have brought Naser al-Din Shah Qajar into the 21st century, showing his image drinking a cup of coffee with a simple design in the coziest café in Tehran.
