Mearsheimer Warns Iran: Israel Unlikely to Honour Ceasefire

According to Saed News, John Mearsheimer, the influential American political scientist and professor of international relations, has warned Iranian officials of an imminent collapse in the current ceasefire, particularly at the hands of Israel. In a recent public address, Mearsheimer suggested that both Israel and the United States, whom he characterised as “law-defying actors” in the international arena, are poised to violate what he described as a “self-declared” truce with Iran.

The remarks come amid heightened diplomatic fragility and persistent mistrust between Tehran and Tel Aviv. Mearsheimer’s warning reflects a broader scepticism among foreign policy analysts who view Israeli restraint as temporary and conditional. He argued that historical patterns, as well as the strategic calculus of Israeli leadership, make sustained peace unlikely.

The ceasefire, while not officially brokered through international institutions, has resulted in a brief reduction in overt hostilities. However, Mearsheimer’s comments underscore a deeper concern that without robust third-party enforcement mechanisms, such lulls in aggression are ephemeral.

By characterising Israel and the U.S. as norm-evading powers, Mearsheimer also challenged prevailing narratives in Western media about the region’s power dynamics. His intervention may embolden Iranian policymakers to reconsider assumptions about the durability of the current detente—and to prepare for its potential unraveling.
