SAEDNEWS: Even though Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari is one of the smallest provinces of Iran, it is the home of two of most important tribes of Bakhtirai and Qashqayi and has affected the handicrafts of other cities and has been affected by them in return.

Khorjins: Discover the Tribal and Rural Weaves of Iran

Khorjins, traditional saddlebags used by nomads, go beyond their practical applications in everyday life. In nomadic culture, these handcrafted bags serve not only as storage but also as a form of artistic expression, adding color and variety to the otherwise monotonous rhythm of seasonal migration.

Nomads use Khorjins as sacks, luggage, and crates. They come in a variety of sizes—small, medium, and large—each designed for specific purposes.

Small Khorjins – “Akbeh”
Small Khorjins, known as Akbeh, typically contain documents, valuables, personal belongings, or jewelry. Some are specially designed for women riders, who hang them on saddles to carry their items. These Khorjins often feature two long fabric pieces, around sixty centimeters each, adorned with buttons, patterns, and colorful pom-poms called Varaneh. These pom-poms serve a practical function: they move with the horse’s trot, deterring insects and preventing the horse from tilting its head to avoid flies.

Medium Khorjins
Medium-sized Khorjins, usually measuring 100 × 50 centimeters, are designed to carry food, daily supplies, and essential tools. In regions like Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, they are commonly used for transporting provisions during travel or migration.

Large Khorjins
Large Khorjins are most popular among the Bakhtiari tribe. Measuring 100 × 150 centimeters, they feature rectangular pockets that are wider than they are tall, allowing for efficient storage of bulky items.

Cities such as Darjuneh, Chelgard, and Kuhrang are renowned centers for crafting Khorjins, preserving the artistry and cultural heritage of these unique nomadic accessories. By combining functionality with intricate decoration, Khorjins offer visitors and cultural enthusiasts a glimpse into the creativity, practicality, and lifestyle of Iran’s nomadic communities.
