Everything changed in November 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara rode a record-breaking wave measuring approximately 78 feet (24 meters). His achievement brought worldwide attention to Nazaré and revealed that the Portuguese coast could produce some of the largest surfable waves on Earth.
McNamara returned to Nazaré in January 2013, determined to surpass his own record. He successfully surfed a wave estimated to be close to 100 feet (30 meters) tall. Later that year, Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle also rode an enormous wave, further strengthening Nazaré's reputation as the global capital of giant-wave surfing.
The secret behind Nazaré's extraordinary waves lies beneath the ocean's surface. Offshore is the Nazaré Canyon, the largest underwater canyon in Europe. This deep geological formation stretches toward the coastline and reaches depths of more than 3 miles (5 kilometers).
As powerful Atlantic swells travel across the ocean, the canyon channels and concentrates their energy. When these waves reach the shallower coastal waters, they rise dramatically, producing enormous walls of water that can tower above the shoreline.
