When a Mimosa pudica leaf is touched, electrical and chemical signals move through the plant. These signals ultimately affect specialized cells at the bases of the leaves and leaflets. Changes in water pressure inside these cells, known as turgor pressure, cause the leaves to fold and droop.
The reaction can happen within seconds, making it particularly striking compared with the much slower movements associated with ordinary plant growth. After the stimulus stops, the leaves can gradually reopen as the cells restore their normal water balance.

What scientists can observe is a sophisticated biological signaling system. Mechanical stimulation can be converted into electrical, chemical, and hormonal signals, allowing different parts of a plant to coordinate their responses without a brain or conventional nervous system.
The sensitive plant therefore offers a fascinating example of how living organisms can detect and react to their environment in very different ways. Its rapid leaf movement is a visible reminder that plants are responsive organisms, even though their sensory systems work fundamentally differently from ours.
