Homemade Syrian Falafel with Special Sauce: Simple, Quick, and Delicious Recipe

According to the Saed News cooking section, sandwiches are among the most popular foods in the world. They typically consist of ingredients such as meat or chicken, vegetables, cheese, and more placed between two slices of bread. This food was invented in the 18th century by John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. As a quick, simple, and highly versatile meal that is easy to prepare, sandwiches have gained widespread popularity. They are also convenient to carry and enjoy during travel, picnics, in parks, amusement areas, and more.

Sandwiches come in both hot and cold varieties and can include fillings such as chicken, meat, vegetables, patties, omelets, hamburgers, kebabs, and more. The Syrian falafel sandwich is a famous and delicious dish from Syria. It is quite similar to Arabic falafel, with the main difference being that green peas are used instead of chickpeas. If you’d like to prepare this unique and tasty sandwich with its special sauce at home using an easy method, follow the recipe below.

Ingredients for Syrian Falafel

  • Raw green peas: 300 grams

  • Medium onion: 1

  • Garlic: 2 cloves

  • Small egg: 1

  • Wheat flour: 3 tablespoons

  • Salt, black pepper, red pepper, garlic powder, turmeric, and cumin powder: as needed

  • Fried eggplant strips: a few slices

  • French fries: as desired

  • Pita bread: as needed

  • Tomato and pickles: as needed

  • Oil for frying: as needed

Ingredients for Yogurt Sauce

  • Thick, stirred yogurt: 3 tablespoons

  • Lemon juice: 2 tablespoons

  • Tahini: 1 tablespoon

  • Mayonnaise: 1 tablespoon

  • Salt: as needed

Instructions

Step 1: To prepare this delicious sandwich, first place the green peas along with the peeled onion and garlic into a food processor or blender. Blend for about one minute until the mixture becomes completely smooth.

Step 2: Transfer the puree into a bowl. Add the egg, flour, salt, black and red pepper, cumin, garlic powder, and turmeric. Mix well until fully combined. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes to chill.

Step 3: Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat until fully hot. Remove the mixture from the refrigerator. Wash and dry your hands, then take a portion about the size of a small tangerine, shape it into a ball, and place it into the hot oil. Reduce the heat to medium and allow about 30 minutes for both sides of the falafel to fry thoroughly until dark and crispy.

Step 4: To prepare the sauce, simply mix the yogurt, mayonnaise, tahini, lemon juice, and a little salt until smooth.

Step 5: Finally, place a pita bread on your work surface. Gently open one side of the bread halfway. Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons of the sauce inside, then place three falafel pieces on top. Add some fried eggplant strips and French fries, and finish with slices of tomato and pickles. Fold the bread back, roll the sandwich gently, and wrap it in sandwich paper. Your delicious Syrian falafel sandwich is now ready to serve. You can enjoy it with spicy sauce or any sauce of your choice.

Important Tips

  • Pita bread is a thin, soft bread similar to lavash and is ideal for salads and sandwiches. It is widely available in supermarkets.

  • Green peas are part of the legume family and are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins A, C, K, and B. They also contain manganese, copper, phosphorus, folic acid, protein, magnesium, iron, and potassium. This nutritious ingredient helps prevent osteoporosis, reduces the risk of stomach cancer, boosts the immune system, supports heart health, regulates blood sugar, improves vision, and enhances skin freshness.

  • Tahini is a highly nutritious paste made from roasted or ground sesame seeds. It has a warm nature and is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Since it is sensitive to heat and direct sunlight, it should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light to preserve its beneficial properties.
