  • 3 medium onions

  • 600 g shrimp

  • 3 tablespoons flour

  • Oil for frying, as needed

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Method for Preparing Brazilian Acarajé

Preparing the filling:

First, slice the onions thinly and place them in a pan with the olive oil. Sauté them over medium heat, then add salt and sweet pepper (paprika), stirring continuously until the onions turn brown or golden in color. This process takes about 15 minutes to prepare the filling of this dish. Then add the shrimp to the pan and stir well until they turn pink and become slightly crispy. Remove the pan from the heat and add an appropriate amount of salt and pepper.

Preparing the dough:

Place the black-eyed peas, onion, and minced garlic in a blender. After removing the seeds and stem of the chili pepper, add it to the blender and blend the ingredients well (you may add one or two tablespoons of water or chicken stock if necessary). Add enough flour so that the dough becomes firm enough to shape, then divide it into 15 portions and shape each one into a ball or oval.

Heat the oil well in a small pot for frying, then fry the dough until it turns brown. After frying, place the pieces on paper towels to absorb excess oil, then fill them with the prepared filling and serve.
