Studies conducted in medical offices suggest that VR headsets can serve as a tool to distract children from the mild pain of needle pricks or blood draws. Most children who wore these headsets reportedly experienced less discomfort during such procedures.
Creating a sense of calm and comfort is essential in these situations. VR content often includes images of toys, bright lights, and visually engaging scenes. However, these visuals are designed carefully so that children remain focused and do not react suddenly with their hands or feet, which could pose a safety risk during injections.
Dr. Chad Rodenick, an entrepreneur and professor at Atlantic University, proposed testing VR headsets after observing an 8-year-old child during treatment. Once initial tests proved successful, attention shifted to developing images that could capture a child’s focus even more effectively.
