SAEDNEWS: Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative in Vienna said Iran has been elected to the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference following a secret ballot and support from several countries. He described the outcome as a setback for the United States, which had opposed Iran’s membership.
According to Saednews, Iranian Ambassador to Vienna Reza Najafi said Tuesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran secured membership in the General Committee of an international conference after the issue was put to a secret ballot.
Najafi said Iran had been nominated by the MESA geographical group and was expected to be approved. He claimed that the United States opposed Iran’s membership, leading the conference to hold a vote.
According to Najafi, several countries supported Iran’s position and called for a secret ballot. The vote ultimately confirmed Iran’s membership in the General Committee.
The Iranian ambassador described the outcome as another political setback for Washington. He also said the United States had sought, through pressure on the host country, to prevent Mohammad Eslami, Iran’s vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization, from attending the conference.
