SAEDNEWS: Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, in his latest statements, called on the international community to impose harsher sanctions against Russia. He emphasized that only through extensive economic and political pressure can Moscow’s war machine be stopped.
According to SAEDNEWS, quoting Russia Today, the war in Ukraine has entered a war of attrition, with both sides trying to shift the balance of power in their favor using various tools. Amid this, Zelensky once again stressed the importance of economic sanctions as the most crucial tool of pressure on Russia. He believes that without increasing pressure, it is impossible to force Moscow to retreat.
Since the beginning of the war, Western sanctions against Russia have been implemented as a key instrument to weaken the country’s economic and military capacity. Zelensky states that while these measures have been effective, they are still not enough, as Russia has found ways to circumvent part of the pressures.
Zelensky emphasizes several main points: reducing Russia’s oil and gas revenues, limiting access to advanced technologies, and increasing Moscow’s financial costs for waging war. He believes that if these pressures are intensified, Russia will no longer be able to continue the war at its current scale.
The European Union and the United States have so far approved multiple sanction packages. However, disagreements among European countries, especially regarding energy, pose a serious obstacle to increasing pressure. At the same time, Washington continues to emphasize the need for global coordination to implement sanctions more effectively.
One of the main challenges is the cooperation of some countries with Russia in circumventing the sanctions. Countries in Asia and the Middle East continue to purchase energy from Russia. This indicates that without broader consensus, the effectiveness of the sanctions will remain limited.
Additional sanctions against Russia could also have consequences for the global economy. Rising energy prices, supply chain disruptions, and inflationary pressure on European countries are among the risks of this path. However, Zelensky asserts that the cost of inaction would be far greater.
Sanctions, in addition to their economic impact, have also directly affected Russia’s military capacity. Restrictions on access to advanced components have slowed the production of certain weapons. Zelensky believes that intensifying this trend could help shift the balance on the battlefield.
Three possible scenarios are outlined:
Intensified sanctions and reduced Russian capacity: In this scenario, the West responds positively to Zelensky’s request, and the Kremlin faces a severe financial crisis.
Continuation of the current situation: Sanction packages continue but are not intensified, and the war remains in a war-of-attrition mode.
Rift within the Western front: Conflicting interests among European countries weaken the enforcement of sanctions, allowing Russia to withstand the pressures.
Zelensky’s call for more sanctions against Russia indicates that Ukraine considers the economic war as vital as the military battle. The outcome of this request depends on the West’s ability to build consensus and bear its economic consequences.
