SAEDNEWS: An official with the Tehran Guild Union says Iran’s railway network can help secure the transit interests of regional countries, while the current geopolitical landscape has transformed the country’s rail routes into a vital bridge connecting Central Asia with the Caucasus.
According to Saednews, Iran’s railway operations are expected to continue despite recent US sanctions targeting the country’s rail sector, according to Peyman Sanandaji, Chairman of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce’s Transport Commission.
Speaking to Mehr News Agency, Sanandaji said Iran’s rail transport capacity and service quality have remained stable despite challenging economic conditions and the latest sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
He explained that placing a railway-related entity on the US sanctions list does not automatically bring all rail activities to a halt.
“Rail operations cannot be expected to stop simply because the railway sector has been sanctioned,” Sanandaji said.
He noted, however, that the sanctions could create difficulties for international payments and financial settlements, contractual cooperation, the supply of railway components and equipment, and fleet maintenance. Despite these challenges, he said he does not expect train operations to stop.
Sanandaji also highlighted Iran’s strategic position in regional rail transit, saying the country’s railway network can support the transit interests of neighboring and regional states. He added that Iran’s geopolitical position has transformed its rail network into an important link connecting Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Pakistan.
