SAEDNEWS: Germany will order a fourth new reconnaissance vessel for its navy, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Monday during the keel-laying ceremony for the third ship of the same class in Wolgast, a Baltic Sea port.
According to Saednews, A draft budget for an additional ship has been submitted to parliament for approval, Pistorius said at the Rheinmetall shipyard, according to German media reports.
Pistorius said the ships can detect signals and sounds that other vessels are unable to pick up. He described them as essential tools for developing a clearer understanding of activities at sea, noting that they collect and analyze a broad range of maritime signals.
German officials have long maintained that the navy needs improved capabilities to monitor the Baltic Sea, where undersea cables and energy infrastructure have been damaged and Russian military activity has increased since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.
