According to SAEDNEWS, citing Khabar Online, a report by Smithsonian Magazine notes that animals are generally classified into three groups: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. However, these categories are not always precise.
Videos of typically herbivorous animals such as cows and horses consuming animal matter frequently circulate online. According to zoologist Darren Naish, such behavior is relatively common among some herbivores, and there have even been observations of a cow eating more than 40 chicks in a single month.
Sometimes this behavior is completely intentional and occurs as a result of calcium deficiency. Among deer and other hoofed animals, consuming bones to obtain calcium has been documented.
Science writer Jason Goldman explains that a wide range of herbivores—including giraffes, sheep, cattle, camels, and horses—occasionally engage in carnivorous behavior by eating either live animals or the remains of dead animals.
